The Ytri Rangá (West Rangá) is best known for it‘s outstanding salmon runs that are built on huge smolt releasing programs. The river though has also large brown trout in the upper regions…and some excellent sea trout. Several days ago, the record for the biggest from the river was smashed!
Local angler Einar Falur Ingólfsson, guided by his brother Kristinn, was fishing the pool Línustrengur when his half inch Black and Blue cone head was viciously attacked. For the next forty minutes Einar fought the fish that he originally thought was probably a large salmon. But as it tired and came closer the truth became clear. It was a huge sea trout, measuring 94 centimeters and thought to weigh somewhere from 22 to 24 pounds.
Einar himself said with a broad smile that he would probably have dreams of this fish for the rest of his days. And things only got better when West Rangá caretaker Jóhannes Hinriksson told us that Einar‘s sea trout was a record for the river. „I have been here for decades, have never heard of a bigger one and of only one other that exceeded 90 centimeters. It was a few years back, and that particular sea trout was measured 90 centimeters. We often have large sea trout, some of which exceed 80 centimeters but these two were exceptional. So we have a record fish here,“ Jóhannes said.
