We have new weekly statistics from the website angling.is. The date is 26th June. The salmon season started roughly with very low water, but things have been picking up recently and just after the 26th the West and North finally had some rain. So next week statistics will be even more interesting. But the rivers need steady rainfalls due to the lack of snowfields in the highlands.

Urriðafoss beat in the glacial river Þjórsá is the top beat as it has been over the past two seasons. A very short beat that totally fills up with salmon in two pools below the falls. The beat opened up on the 1st of June and last Wednesday it had produced 319 salmon, most of them multy winter salmons but grilse have started to arrive as well. The week produced 63 salmon to four rods, the week before 72 salmon.
Blanda, in the north is next with 110 salmon to four rods. It opened on the 5th of June had a weekly catch of 25 salmon, the week before 31. The river has had some of Iceland’s biggest fish to date, two 98 cm and one 100 cm.
Brennan, the junction beat of river Þverá/Kjarrá mingling with Hvítá has been very prolific due to the low water, as the salmon entering the Þverá/Kjarrá stop there when the conditions are as they have been. It had the total of 93 salmon to three rods. The weekly total was 39, the week before 19 salmon, so that is an indication that there are salmon running despite the low water conditions.
Next on the list is the river East Rangá with 93 salmon and a very prolific week of 63 salmon. The river Miðfjarðará has been bogged down with the low water, yet it has yielded 63 salmon with the weekly total of 39 salmon.
A few rivers displayed their first total of the summer, West Rangá with 57 salmon, Laxá in Aðaldal 44 salmon, Haffjarðará 40 salmon and the Elliðaár, inside Reykjavík‘s city limits with 36 salmon, most of them multi winter salmons which is highly unusual as the river is one of the purest grilse rivers in the country.
The Grímsá had one of the best openings on the west coast, one and a half weeks producing 31 salmon. The whole week with 21 salmon.
At the same time, the river Norðurá crawled up to 29 salmon which is of course not like Norðurá at all but the river was arguably in the worst shape due to the draughts. The week produced 18 salmon, and since, the fishing has been picking up. Þverá/Kjarrá also had 29 salmon and a weekly haul of 17 salmon. As it’s neighbour the Norðurá, the recent rain gave the river a boost.
